“We got a 26-year-old defenseman who's got experience in the league, he's played 20-plus minutes (a game) in Los Angeles and Colorado,'' Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. “He competes. He's really coming into his prime.
“He's a restricted free agent. We expect him to be on our team going forward, and he improves our team on the back end this year.''
“I talked to (Colorado GM) Greg Sherman a few days ago about Quincey and we didn't have a fit,'' Holland said. “In the last 48 hours, Steve (Yzerman) called me and said he had a deal to get Quincey and asked if we're interested.
“We talked about picks and prospects. We didn't want to trade a lot of prospects Steve was interested in.''
The cost of a first-round pick shows how competitive the trade market is, as there are far more buyers than sellers.
“We got some kids (in the organization),'' Holland said. “The time is now. It's not a rental. We think he makes us better and deeper on the back end. That first-round pick, if it's a good pick, he would have played in Detroit five years from now.''
“We should have never let him go,'' Holland said. “It worked out great for him. He got an opportunity in L.A .and Colorado. As his name came up, we knew him, liked him. He became the player we hoped we would be (when he left).
“If we could do it all over again, we'd make a different decision. We're happy to have him back |
